The other option of course is Rifts and Greater Rifts, but those are even more randomly generated than the random quests.
We as gamers have always griped about why linear gameplay isn't fun, but after witnessing what happens as the reciprocal to linear, I can't find any motivation to even log on any more.
Having a linear path of progression gives motivation to get to the next check point!
I always enjoyed gearing up, and when you have an alt that has a socketed weapon drop, and you grab a high end Ruby from your main to use for it, your damage skyrockets!
It was so thrilling to me to blast bosses away with a few strikes, it almost felt like a cheat code.
When drops weren't in your favor, you could swing over to the RMAH, using money or gold mind you, and play around with auctions.
I understand what all went into that system, and how Blizzard's design was not how the game ended up with direction, but personally, I loved where it was going.
On a tangent, do any of you feel any similarities between the current state of Diablo III's endgame and that of WoW Legion?
I have stopped playing Legion out of boredom, in the exact same fashion and timeframe that Diablo III became boring, and in my opinion, for the same reasons.
Both of the auction houses were terrible, as was the loot system.
I never got a single legendary worth anything to my class.
I always had to buy stuff from AH, and try to money plant house whatever worthless drops I did get.
Was not funny, nor did it feel rewarding.

WURM ONLINE - Wurm's currency is also purchased through cash.
While it has no option to cash out they openly allow you to post things like "Selling silver 1EU per silver" in the in-game trade chat and on the market section of the forums.
The stark difference between Wurm and Entropia is that Wurm has a lot of things you can do at no cost to earn in-game silver.
One downside is that is a subscription based game with the free to play option generating very little potential for notable profits.
So you'll have to be at least semi-active to even break even.
STAR CITIZEN - While RMT is a bit more underground in this game they do not crack down on RMT happening on reddit known as the "Grey Market.

With the learning curve of that game I feel like I might as well learn how to use something along the lines Unity and make my own game from scratch.

But it was a nice experience, and their scripting was fun.
Tried it again last year, for checking a similar mmo-esque project inside like the above linked Remnants of Earth, and I must say, SL is pretty weird now But the world is simply massive, it developed a lot over the years.
Don't know though, how much money you can make from it, haven't stayed long enough to map out the system.

I found it's implementation very interesting but flawed.
Real world currency is used to buy the ingame currency.
Then almost everything you do in-game costs currency.
For instance hunting costs ammo and unless you get pretty lucky or have a very good character you are likely to lose more in ammo then you get in loot.
It's like a virtual slot machine with the odds getting slightly better as you level your character.
The market in this game is also intensely competitive with everyone trying super hard to make the deals work in their favor so they can make some money.
So you could make money from the start playing the market but that is a difficult game to play.
The upside that I did like about this game is has no monthly premium.
When you get back you've lost nothing and pick up where you left off.
That at least, I found pretty cool.
I also liked that there are actually passive income sources in-game through the form of land deeds that give you a portion of the value of all the loot hunted in the area where you hold the deed.
Another other cool part is in-game currency can be cashed out for hard cash at any time.
A slight fee does apply but that's always there.
WURM ONLINE - Wurm's currency is also purchased through cash.
While it has no option to cash out they openly allow you to post things like "Selling silver 1EU per silver" in the in-game trade chat and on the market section of the forums.
The stark difference between Wurm and Entropia is that Wurm has a lot of things you can do at no cost to earn in-game silver.
One downside is that is a subscription based game with the free to play option generating very little potential for notable profits.
So you'll have to be at least semi-active to even break even.
STAR CITIZEN - While RMT is a bit more underground in this game they do not crack down on RMT happening on reddit known as the "Grey Market.
The huge advantage of Star Citizen is that it's market is hot.
I've personally made 4 figures trading on the grey market though admittedly this was because I bought up some very rare limited edition ships early on and sold them at a premium a couple years down the road.
The market has cooled down a bit since then.
It will be interesting to see what they tolerate in the grey market post game release.
If the grey market allows in-game currency trading post game release it will be a very interesting title for those looking to make a bit of side income.
