MOTHER Brooke Astor, January 21, 1999 Photo: Richard Avedon, ©2007 The Richard Avedon Foundation.
Courtesy of The New Yorker Near midnight on August 11, Anthony Marshall and his wife, Charlene, approached the front door of Holly Hill, the Westchester estate that belonged to his mother, Brooke Astor, who was dying.
As they drew close, Mrs.
Tony, in tie and Marine Corps tie clasp, walked slowly to Annette and stood in front of her.
He wanted to be close.
This may be the last time.
Out one window, he could glimpse the Hudson River and some of the 65 acres of the estate his mother loved to stroll with her dogs.
Brooke Astor, who was once, as many a journalist said, the most popular person in New York, lay under a soft pink quilt.
go here was also an improbably long life.
Now she had trouble breathing, she could barely swallow; her arms were black from poor circulation.
She weighed perhaps 75 pounds.
Tony sat on the pink quilt and shuffled the frail woman into his arms.
Her makeup was done.
The nurses had put it on just as she liked.
Red lips, blue eye shadow, pink cheeks.
Someone had removed photos of Tony from the marble-topped table next to her bed.
His mother made a sound, a little groan.
The Reverend Pridemore read from the Book of Common Prayer, prayers for ministration at the time of death.
And the fight over her legacy began in earnest.
Tony has an upper-class accent.
How much I saw her in New York?
When I had a terrible nosebleed, my mother put me next to her in her bed.
I stayed right in her bed till the next day.
One trip was wonderful, starting in Venice, ending in Monte Carlo, where Grace Kelly and her husband came onboard and had a drink.
The wills and codicils Brooke signed late in life speed up the process by which Tony comes into his inheritance, and give him more.
Lately, the district attorney has joined the accusers.
A grand jury is considering indictments.
To all this, Tony has a simple rebuttal.
He felt Tony was spoiled, and selected a boarding school to which Tony was shipped off when he was 11.
Staggeringly this web page and with a gilded New York name, he was also notoriously difficult.
The leading candidate was the beautiful Janet Rhinelander Stewart, according to Kiernan, whose insightful biography of Brooke appeared this year.
Stewart, who had her own money, shot Astor down, even after he assured her that his doctors gave him just three years to live because of emphysema.
Brooke was next in line.
And the second time they met, Astor proposed to her.
A short time later, Brooke asked Tony, then 29, for advice, He knew she wanted him to say yes.
Through all her marriages, Tony was often left to grow up on his own.
By most measures, he did a fair job.
At 18, he joined the Marines and earned a Purple Heart leading a platoon at Iwo Jima.
He worked at the CIA, helping engineer the U-2 spy program.
He published seven books.
He served as ambassador to Madagascar, Trinidad and Tobago, the Seychelles, and Kenya.
Then, in 1979, his diplomatic career at an end—his initial patron had been Richard Nixon—Tony went to work for his mother, supervising her finances.
GRANDSON Philip Marshall outside the gates of Holly Hill with Boysie, one of Astor's dachsunds.
FRIEND Annette de la Renta and Brooke Astor, 2002.
Mainly, he points out, he managed her personal money.
That he did quite well.
It was a significant amount, though not by Astor standards.
Do you have a cook?
Do you have a housekeeper?
Why should I get more money?
She meant it nicely, but really without a sense of humor.
In 1998, when he was 74, she gave Tony a duplex on 79th Street, near her place at 778 Park Avenue, and later a car and driver.
When I mention that it seems as if Brooke preferred to keep Tony dependent, Tony pauses a long time—21 seconds.
Besides, Tony received other compensation—after years away, he was her consort, always close by.
He danced behind her, as she later described it.
At times, both David Rockefeller and his brother Laurance seemed to be in love with her.
She quipped that she put herself to sleep by counting her lovers.
To Tony and Charlene, Brooke was trying to make amends by changing her wills.
Then at night, she went out.
Above all, Brooke hated to be bored.
Brooke fretted; she always had.
For at least fifteen years, she privately quizzed her staff: Do I have enough?
I wrote to him and brought this to his attention.
But I want him to be friendly.
As his mother aged, Tony says, his job turned more difficult.
She fired her social secretaries one after the other—one because her skirts were too short.
Howard Fillit, a geriatric specialist, to better understand the changes in her.
She was delusional at times, he wrote.
She misplaced eyeglasses, gloves, and blamed a maid for hiding them.
And in lucid moments, she felt awful.
As she aged, she increasingly turned to Tony to manage the households.
By 2006, when Brooke was 104, her life was increasingly limited.
Tony and Charlene warned some off.
By then, Brooke used just a few rooms in the vast Park Avenue duplex.
Tony felt sensible economies were in order.
Tony and Charlene let him go, saying she could use their driver.
In early 2005, Tony and Charlene closed the Holly Hill house and fired the butler.
One day in spring 2005, Robert Silvers, editor of the New York Review of Books, visited Brooke with Annette.
Tony and Charlene felt it important that she remain in the city, near doctors and friends.
Since then, father and son had spent some pleasant vacations together.
Still, for Philip, the mine money and making change games this fatherly in relation to his father provokes a laugh.
Philip insists he has no animus toward his father.
Whatever sympathies Philip felt, on Read article the fight for love and money, 2006, he filed an aggressive petition with the court.
He wanted his father stripped of responsibility for his grandmother, and he painted a Grey Gardens—like picture of her living conditions.
Tony refused to learn more here nurses call 911 without permission.
Philip proposed that Annette take care of his grandmother.
A judge swiftly appointed her temporary guardian, a decision that became permanent as part of a settlement with Tony.
The process he initiated led to other troubling allegations.
She grew up in modest circumstances and still likes to bake.
She sets a plate of chocolate-chip cookies atop a pile of books on a table.
This is our home.
He has dug up some letters that reveal her feelings.
Most date from 30 years ago, when Tony was an ambassador.
Charlene has the butler fetch the letters.
The letters are fascinating, though not only for the reason Tony proposes.
She names a person who died.
I definitely need it as I … look a million yrs.
Tony may be the diplomat, but one never forgets that Brooke moves in the highest circles.
The letters are loving, adoring, even maternal.
A graver offense is that they are dull.
Worse yet, they are indifferent to her charms.
I have never been able to overcome my vulnerability.
Brooke complains about the ragamuffin boys who in these letters are in their teens and twentiesbut she is interested in them.
She invests in their futures, for which she has hopes.
The subtext is that she wants Tony to be the father Philip needs—the one Tony never had.
No preaching can do it, but to see you in action would be an eye opener for him.
I hope that you can arrange it.
But Annette and Tony were natural rivals—Brooke liked to say Annette was like a daughter to her.
Brooke and Annette were different.
Brooke was regal, the natural center of attention.
Annette, who is married to the fashion designer Oscar de la Renta, is shier.
Together, though, they seemed cozy, gossipy.
After Brooke bought a dachshund named Boysie, Annette, saying the dog was lonely, got her another named Girlsie.
They loved clothes; they had great legs.
Later, when Brooke was housebound, Annette would stop by on her way out for the evening to show Brooke what she was wearing.
Annette said it was a place for family and friends.
That included the Kissingers, who jetted down the fight for love and money an en famille Christmas, as well as the Clintons, Baryshnikov, and Barbara Walters.
Brooke flew down, too, of course.
Betsy remembers that they swam with the dolphins.
Brooke, in her nineties, jumped right in.
Both Brooke and Annette also shared a belief that the upper crust had obligations, particularly to the Culture, capital C.
Annette had followed her mother, Jane Engelhard, onto the board of the Met, where Brooke, of course, served, too.
And then came the inevitable refrain.
Why would anybody make Tony an ambassador otherwise?
And they knew, too, the fight for love and money Tony had a happy married life.
Tony sometimes thinks he and Charlene might have been married in a former life.
They hold hands, engage in long embraces.
Tony and Charlene had met in Maine, in Northeast Harbor, where Brooke summered.
What a gorgeous man.
Tony soon decided that his 30-year marriage to his former secretary had run its course.
This may be the last time.
In front of Charlene, Brooke suggested that Tony marry Pamela Harriman, the Washington socialite and widow of Averell.
To Tony and Charlene, this was just snobbery.
She ministered to the needy, she worked for charity, too.
I was going to say we exchanged gifts, but she gave me more than I gave her.
We did a lot of things together.
Brooke also lent Charlene pieces of her remarkable jewelry collection.
Whatever her true feelings, Brooke realized that Tony loved Charlene and Charlene Tony.
And Brooke, as everyone said, loved Tony.
Instead, we love each other even more.
The bookshelves are detailed in brass, the walls lacquered in red.
Once before, Tony had been on the brink of such a role.
Tony was delighted by her change of heart.
The losing institutions were furious.
To Tony, it seemed his growing list of enemies wanted to get at him however they could.
Her doctor ordered those.
Tony decreed that flowers were only to be in the rooms she used—and purchased at the local market.
Beloved staff members were gone.
And the remaining staff feuded.
After Tony and Charlene fired the chauffeur, no one stepped forward to walk the dogs.
For Philip and Annette, it was so sad.
He embarked on a leisurely summer at Cove End.
Holly Hill was shuttered.
In 2002, Tony says, he stumbled onto a buyer for the Childe Hassam painting.
Brooke told a friend she felt pressured to sell it to support her lifestyle.
But Tony says Brooke jumped at the chance.
Tony was always to get it in the wills, but only if he survived his mother.
Tony quickly deeded it to Charlene.
Estate planning, thought Tony.
People told him he was underpaid.
But it was her wish, he insists.
She realized more and more of what he did for her.
By the middle of 2003, Brooke would often trail off in mid-conversation; her short-term memory was extremely impaired.
A staffer prepared a photo album of friends to help Brooke recognize visitors.
Enough people said so.
Perhaps even Annette conceded as much.
And four months later, Christensen again attested to her competence when Brooke created the Anthony Marshall Fund.
No one doubted that she was dramatically diminished.
But often she seemed able to hold up her end of conversations.
Rees Pritchett, also in attendance, doubted that Brooke could have composed that speech.
She might have been able to read a text, but could she interrelate facts, process abstract concepts?
Still, to Melhado, she seemed alert that day.
It had also taken a year to transfer Cove End.
At this point a lawyer named Francis X.
Tony thought him generous and intelligent.
Morrissey helped Tony and Charlene with their theater projects.
They knew he was kind, a friend to those in need, the elderly in particular, some of whom turned out to be rich.
For his elderly clients, Morrissey seemed to always be there.
He supervised health care, dressed them, even took them to the bathroom.
Francis has a very c snake game in code source ladder and heart.
A woman from Maine left him 29 acres of choice Maine property.
One man changed his will the day before he died, leaving Morrissey a Manhattan apartment.
Morrissey was bequeathed a couple of Renoirs.
They talked books; he sent her volumes to read and also flowers.
This is what she really wants to do.
This is what Brooke wanted.
Brooke wore a smart blue suit, lovely against the red Louis XV chairs.
Tony, in his usual coat and tie, joined them.
Morrissey had hired G.
Morrissey knew what Brooke wanted; Whitaker provided drafting experience.
Tony and Charlene let Christensen go the following month.
Tony—to Whitaker, he is Ambassador Marshall—greeted them, then left.
Morrissey handed Brooke the codicil to her will, which Whitaker had drafted.
When Tony died, the remainder was to go to charity.
In 2003, Brooke had pronounced herself satisfied with that arrangement.
Whitaker may not have met Brooke before, but to him she seemed cogent.
She often made the same comment to friends.
That afternoon she phrased it as a question.
Morrissey assured her they were.
Morrissey handed her a pen.
She thought for a moment.
Charlene contemplates the fortune.
I would give a hell of a lot of it away.
In fact, Annette, who was bequeathed four dog paintings from Brooke, has asked the court to invalidate every will after 1997.
It may have been a tax-planning measure, but it raises suspicions.
The executors will benefit through increased fees.
Morrissey told him casual dress would be disrespectful.
For at least a decade, Brooke had planned her own funeral.
She designated the hymns to the fight for love and money sung, and wrote a guest list.
She put Tony in charge.
For Tony and Charlene, it has become a painful and angry time.
Tony detests his son.
Tony knows his mother loved him—he consoles himself with thoughts of her.
He thinks sometimes of the last months of her life.
Annette had moved Brooke to Holly Hill, where she was sure Brooke wanted to be.
Annette had brought the dogs and filled the house with flowers, upstairs and down.
Tony could see that her eyes were sunken.
Still, her makeup was done.
The staff applied eye shadow and cleaned her breathing tube.
Tony held her hand.
It was hard not to think it was willful, as if she were trying.
Tony talked to her.
And sometimes Brooke muttered something.
It was a thing she sometimes said in her last year to people in her life.

Hi Carla and thanks for the A2A : Fighting for love.
Hmm, for me fight and love are almost mutual exclusive, fight is the antonym of love.
Anyway, I will answer the question based on my personal experiences.
Years ago I was in a relationship the fight for love and money a man whom I truly loved and who deeply loved me in return at least I believed so.
For a few years we were very happy together.
Nonetheless, at some point he decided to concentrate on his career and from his point of view relationship was preventing him from achieving his goals.
I was very attached to him, dependent on him I emigrated with him and I had absolutely nothing and I simply couldn't imagine life without him.
My entire world turned around him.
I was petrified that without him I wouldn't survive.
I tried to do everything to convince him to stay with me.
I tried to 'fight for love'.
I believed that there had to be something I could do to 'win his love back', I wanted that he loved me more than he loved his career.
Nonetheless, it didn't work.
He broke up with me, threw me out of our home and I ended https://crimeaorg.info/and/just-money-and-girls-and-fun.html homeless, more than 20,000km away from home, without money, family or friends.
I was absolutely devastated, nonetheless still determined to 'fight for love'.
Everybody was worried about me, as.
To be honest, at that time my family and all my friends back in Europe thought I would end up in a mental institution, in some respect I was crazy.
It was the toughest time of my life.
I had no choice, but to fight to survive.
I don't wish anybody to go through what I went through at that time.
Somehow I built up my life, at least from material point of view and I was successful at work.
I accepted the fact that I would never love again and I based my entire life on that assumption.
I even got married to a friend I thought it would help me to 'move on with my life'.
By the way, this was a rather silly idea, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone - my husband didn't love me either and my the fight for love and money is practically over Seven years after my breakup I met another man.
From the moment we started talking we understood each other perfectly, it was as if we knew each other for ages.
There was deep understanding and trust between the two of us just recently one of my friends compared the connection between me and this man to the connection between two identical twins - we just 'know' what the other person feels and thinks.
He was going through trauma and I had the fight for love and money overwhelming feeling that I had to help him.
It wasn't about love.
My heart got broken, so I wasn't able to love anymore.
At least it was what I believed.
Everybody around me could see that I loved the man and that he the fight for love and money me in return even my dad, who is married to his soul-mate and therefore he understands love very well, said to me 'Who knows, maybe you two found each other' - he had never said something like that to me beforenonetheless it took me months and months to finally admit that.
Yes, I truly love the man and I knew from the beginning that he loves me, too.
Because of our complicated situations we can't be together as a couple.
It isn't a huge problem for me, for.
I have his love anyway, I know click at this page truly loves me.
Surely I miss him very much and I wish to be with him, however what is more important theme miles and bonus aegean opinion me is to see him achieving his goals and to see him being happy.
I wouldn't like to be with him if I knew that because of me he didn't achieve his goals and that because of me he has regrets in life.
No, I don't want this to happen.
I want him to be happy.
For a few times he tried to break contact with me, he even deleted my phone number and my email address saying "You know I love you and it's why I don't want you to get into any trouble because of me.
I want you to be happy.
And I can't be with you, at least not now, and who knows what the future will bring.
I don't know if I will be ever be able to be with you".
And every time I replied "As you know, I won't contact you, but you can contact me any time.
Whenever you need me I will be always here for you, as I have always been.
I want you to succeed in life and be happy" And until now at some point he either contacted me again or the circumstances brought us back together and we have been friends.
I can't be with him in my body I mean in a relationship as a couple but I am with him in my heart and this is most important.
We are friends and over the years we supported each other a lot, as much as we only could.
Therefore, base on my experience I would say, you don't fight for love.
The love is either there or it isn't, and if it's not, it won't appear magically because you fight for it.
Let him free and if he truly loves you, he will be always with you, he will come back.
If he doesn't love you then.
I still love my former partner and I wish him all the best, nonetheless I wouldn't like to live with him anymore.
I wouldn't like because.
I don't know where my life goes and how my story with my friend will end, but I know for sure that if his situation was different, he would be with me, we would be together as a couple not only in our hearts, but also in our bodies.
He is my inspiration, my strength, my resilience, my hope.
Though I can't be with him in my body, I am with him in my heart and I am succeeding in life thanks to him.
I know, not many people will understand it, but mutual true love is… Not looking at each other, but looking together in the same direction.
Regardless how difficult it is, I will support him and I will be there for him whenever he needs me.
I want our 'friendship' to survive even if it is against all odds for the circumstances of our lives are extremely difficult.
And I know that he the fight for love and money loves me and he also wants our 'friendship' to survive.
In this meaning I fight for love.
When I was a child I was told that… Love will be the hardest work I will ever do in my life, but the most rewarding work I will ever do.
And I can only say that the fight for love and money true.

I felt this entire relationship was based on sex.
How could these two have these strong feelings when they barely spent this web page together without it involving sex.
I loved the premise and it could have been a great story, but the execution and the actions of the characters were just pathetic at times.

MOTHER Brooke Astor, January 21, 1999 Photo: Richard Avedon, ©2007 The Richard Avedon Foundation.
Courtesy of The New Yorker Near midnight on August 11, Anthony Marshall and his wife, Charlene, click at this page the front door of Holly Hill, the Westchester estate that belonged to his mother, Brooke Astor, who was dying.
It was also an improbably long life.
Staggeringly rich and with a gilded New York name, he was also notoriously difficult.
In 1998, when he was 74, she gave Tony a duplex on 79th Street, near her place at 778 Park Avenue, and later the fight for love and money car and driver.
Still, for Philip, the word fatherly in relation to his father provokes a laugh.
Philip insists he has no animus toward his father.
Whatever sympathies Philip felt, on July 24, 2006, he filed an aggressive petition with the court.
He wanted his father stripped source responsibility for his grandmother, and he painted a Grey Gardens—like picture of her living conditions.
Tony refused to let nurses call 911 without permission.
The letters are fascinating, the fight for love and money not only for the reason Tony proposes.

They loved clothes; they had great legs.

Annette said it was a place for family and friends.
That included the Kissingers, who jetted down for an en famille Christmas, as well as the Clintons, Baryshnikov, and Read article Walters.
Brooke flew down, too, of course.
Betsy remembers that they swam with the dolphins.
Brooke, in her nineties, jumped right in.
Both Brooke and Annette also shared a belief that the upper crust had obligations, particularly to source Culture, capital C.
Annette had followed her mother, Jane Engelhard, onto the board of the Met, where Brooke, of course, served, too.
And then came the inevitable refrain.
Why would anybody make Tony an ambassador the fight for love and money />And they knew, too, that Tony had a happy married life.
In front of Charlene, Brooke suggested that Tony marry Pamela Harriman, the Washington socialite and widow of The fight for love and money />To Tony and Charlene, this was just snobbery.
The bookshelves are detailed in the fight for love and money, the walls lacquered in red.
They knew he was kind, a friend to those in need, the elderly the fight for love and money particular, some of whom turned out to be rich.
For his elderly clients, Morrissey seemed to always be there.
He supervised health care, dressed them, even took them to the bathroom.
Francis has a very soft heart.
Tony—to Whitaker, the fight for love and money is Ambassador Marshall—greeted them, then left.
In fact, Annette, who the fight for love and money bequeathed four dog paintings from Brooke, has asked the court to invalidate every will after 1997.
It may have been a tax-planning measure, but it raises suspicions.
The executors will benefit through increased fees.
Morrissey told him casual dress would be disrespectful.
For at least a decade, Brooke had planned her own funeral.
She designated the hymns to be sung, and wrote a guest list.
